Socialism in the Bible, and Britney. Again.

Does God want us to be socialists? Well, I'm beginning to wonder, what with this passage from the Bible - that's right, the Bible - that Sojourners recently emailed out. Wonder what religious fundamentalist, so philosophically averse to "communism," make of it?

Now the whole group of those who believed were of one heart and soul, and no one claimed private ownership of any possessions, but everything they owned was held in common. With great power the apostles gave their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all. There was not a needy person among them, for as many as owned lands or houses sold them and brought the proceeds of what was sold. They laid it at the apostles' feet, and it was distributed to each as any had need.

- Acts 4:32-35

I'm Like So Totally Shocked ...

On another topic, Britney Spears and her now-pregnant 16-year-old sister are making themselves useful in one area: being negative object lessons for pubescent girls. Yes, I know - they're sort of victims. But they're sort of perpetrators, too, and that's where their saga needs to end. Our already hyper-sexualized teen girls don't need any more examples of empty-headed and pathetic female behavior. What I hope girls learn? How's this: Put on a tube top and lip gloss, warm up the flashbulbs, and suddenly you're ... nowhere at all. Look at the Spears' girls.

I don't have thoughts on Pakistan, except that to say I'm pretty certain the next and last war will emerge from there.

Focusing on the first part...you are totally taking it out of context. First off a socialist government takes from the rich and gives to the poor. In this passage they are willing giving it too them. Government is not there taking what they own and giving it to them, so NO the Bible does not support a socialist government. If anything we are to help the poor in ways to make an earning, proving them with techniques that will last a life time. If you just give them things then they will become more lazy and will expect to get everything for free.

Anonymous: Those are common misconceptions (among Americans). Please read up on what socialism is, and what it's effects are. From neutral sources. I recommend you check how the socialistic system has worked in Scandinavia, and the effects it has had. The Scandinavians are the world's freest people. Among the healthiest, best educated and richest. And that is because - not in spite - of socialism.
